Do The Twist

Title: Do the Twist
Artist: Tubby Chess and His Candy-Stripe Twisters
Purchased: Richland Center Antique Mall, Winter of 2001
Verdict: Let's not, like we did last summer

My friend Dan Guterman once wrote a list for McSweeneys entitled "Popular Singers Inspired By Fats Domino and Chubby Checker". It's funny unless you know that there actually were a number of imitators hoping to cash in on the success of Chubby Checker, only they lacked the stage-name imagination. Such is the case with Tubby Chess née Flatus Argyle of the Detroit Argyles.

That's not his actual birth name. I'm just suffering from a lack of anything to say and lashing out with juvenile names. Plus I can't find anything about him on the internet. In any case, Do The Twist sounds like you're receiving two oldies radio stations at once. It's all familiar, but it's sure not fun to listen to. Actually, I find Chubby Checker insufferable. Here's a guy that recorded an annoying novelty song that he didn't even write and he thinks that he changed rock and roll. Nuts to him and this Tubby Chess guy both!

What about Mr. Checker's collaboration with the Fat Boys? Could that have made you reconsider Chubby?

I propose that list is just as unfunny regardless whether you knew or not of the real-life imitators.
